St. Helena, CA – Today, Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-04) issued the below statement in response to Senate Republicans’ proposal to put over 250 million acres of public land up for sale, including protected land in California’s 4th District:
“Our public lands are critical in keeping fish, wildlife, and natural habitats healthy. They contribute to our clean air and water, and they provide all Americans access to the outdoors. That’s why I’ve worked in Congress to conserve over 4 million acres of land across our country.
“I’m sickened by Senate Republicans’ proposal to put over 250 million acres of our public lands up for sale. To propose the largest sale of public lands in modern history, including risking the privatization of Cow Mountain and other cherished land right here in our district, is a betrayal of the American people. This has the potential of locking millions of Americans out of their land.
“Senate Republicans are literally selling out our nation’s wildlife to pay for tax breaks for their billionaire donors. Every American, regardless of party stripe, should be absolutely outraged. I know I am.”
