Rep. Thompson presenting the award to Katie Jackson
“Julia Jackson is a perfect example of how we can take on the climate crisis in nearly every way imaginable,” said Thompson. “As a board member of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, Julia has consistently applied her expertise to shape new sustainable agriculture policy. Her commitment to taking on the climate crisis has led her to launch two environmental advocacy groups, Grounded and the Clean Energy Freedom campaign.
“Katie Jackson is demonstrative of how climate action can help businesses succeed. As the leader of successful efforts at Jackson Family Wines to become the largest onsite solar energy generating winery in the United States, Katie is also pushing for reforms in the international wine community to promote environmental stewardship. Her work is paving the way for sustainability and green practices in the wine community around the world.
“It is clear that Julia and Katie are dedicated environmental stewards and they are well-deserving of this recognition.”
Katie Jackson was born in San Francisco, California and attended Wellesley College in Massachusetts. In addition to her work at Jackson Family Wines, Katie is the cofounder of International Wineries for Climate Action, through which she works to mobilize wineries and implement carbon reductions around the world. In line with her conservation goals, Katie supports salmon population growth. Katie has secured many Safe Harbor Agreements in order to conserve habitats for varying endangered species.
Julia Jackson’s work is also prominent outside of the bounds of Sonoma County. As a cofounder of the Keystone Species Alliance, she has partnered with government officials in Mexico to introduce legislation protecting vulnerable species. Julia’s personal knowledge and collaborative skills have allowed for the creation of a coalition of nations whose biodiversity must be protected. Julia sits on the board of many environmental organizations and has responded to the climate crisis with significant action.
